Recovery After C Section

 

A cesarean section, otherwise known as C section, is a type of a surgical procedure done in which one or more incisions are created through a mother’s abdomen and uterus to deliver one or more babies.


The procedure was first performed by a German gynecologist in 1880s. The C section is usually performed when a normal spontaneous delivery will put the baby’s or mother’s life at risk, although at present, expectant mothers can elect to have a C section even when vaginal delivery is viable.

Since this procedure may pose high risk,  recovery after C section should be given importance for safe labor and delivery.

Recovery after C section is essential to maintain the health and well being of the mother. Just like the other forms of abdominal surgery, C section is often linked with risks of post-operative adhesions, wound infections and incisional herniation or protrusion of the vital organs.

When C section is performed under emergency situations, the risk of surgery may be increased because of several factors associated with it, such as poor health and poor prognosis. Other usual risks include severe blood loss and post spinal headaches. Nevertheless, proper monitoring, regular supervision and checking can be the fundamental keys in ensuring a rapid recovery after C-section through quick healing and repair and avoid any complications.

Mothers should take some essential precautions in order to speed up the recovery after C section and healing of the incision.

To help them with their recovery, the hospital staff will monitor mothers in the hospital to make sure that all is well  after the operation, and the surgical site must be well-protected against infection. Cleanliness becomes an important issue to ward off infection. Mothers are also encouraged to shower 24 to 48 hours after surgery. Also, the wound area should be pat dry with a towel and leave it  to dry naturally

Another precaution to take into consideration is not to use any topical creams or ointments on the incision except for the prescribed antibiotics cream. Another precaution is to ensure that the scab is not disturbed. This is the natural way the body heals from wounds.

Recovery after C section rests in part on the healing and closing up of the wound. Some mothers are encouraged to bind the stomach. Though it is no longer necessary, it’s now just a matter of preference. In fact, some mothers find that it reduces discomfort when the stomach is bound with a clean strip of cloth or the ready made one, especially designed for those who have had C section surgery.

Postpartum women can also experience faster recovery after C section by early ambulation, adequate pain relief, early breastfeeding, and early discharge from the hospital. Taking part in any form of exercises during recovery after C-section is essential.

In addition, dealing with the emotional issues can also be very important. Some may feel upset, disappointed or mad. These are all natural feelings that come, postpartum. The body is undergoing major changes and hormones play a big part.

Women who just delivered are encouraged to aggressively confront these feelings by talking about them. Recovery after C section also means being aware of the emotional toll of childbirth. Postpartum depression is real, and should not be taken lightly.
